March 2008

Adam “Pacman” Jones has openly courted the Dallas Cowboys as a possible employer if NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell reinstates the suspended Tennessee Titans cornerback. He was a guest on former Cowboys receiver Michael Irvin’s radio show and hoped for a second chance.”I’m not sitting here telling you I don’t own up to mistakes I’ve made,” Jones said. “I accept everything, the punishment, everything that comes along with the bad decisions and bad choices I’ve made.” If it takes one to know one, then Jones had the right guy in front of him in Irvin, who was inducted into the pro Football Hall of Fame in 2007 regardless of his off-the-field issues. The ‘Boys would be taking a big chance if they do in fact sign Jones. But the upside could be huge if he walks a fine line. Six arrests in three years would make that unlikely.

According to a report on NFL.com, a mock draft has the Jets picking Boston College quarterback Matt Ryan next month. Newsday’s Tom Rock, the team beat writer, feels that they will go that route with the improvements that they have made in free agency.Rock likens the situation to the Cleveland Browns, who have Derek Anderson as the starter and Brady Quinn in the wings. Gang Green has both Chad Pennington and Kellen Clemens, who are expected to fight it out in training camp for the starting job.If the Jets do select a quarterback that early, it would be a big surprise and probably result in a loud chorus of boos from the green jersey wearing Jet faithful gathered at Radio City Music Hall.

Jason Fabini, a servicable offensive lineman, has re-signed with the Washington Redskins. The former Jet and Cowboy ended up starting 13 games for Joe Gibbs last season due to injuries to starters Randy Thomas and Jon Jansen. The veteran will be entering his 11th season in the NFL and should enter the 2008 season as a versatile reserve for Washington.

“With the second choice in the 2008 NFL Draft, the St. Louis Rams select…”Will these words be spoken by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell or will he be announcing a deal at around 12:15 on the last Saturday in April? The Rams may hold the number-two pick, but don’t count out a trade possibility if they can find a suitor. Regardless of who the Miami Dolphins take at the top spot, there will be a very talented player available. The Fish may end up trading down, as well. So the top may look differently than the early draft boards do now.Previous number two picks include Calvin Johnson (Lions), Reggie Bush (Saints), Ronnie Brown (Dolphins), Robert Gallery (Raiders), Charles Rogers (Lions), Julius Peppers (Panthers), Leonard Davis (Cardinals), LaVarr Arrington (Redskins), Donovan McNabb (Eagles), Ryan Leaf (Chargers), Darrel Russell (Raiders), and Kevin Hardy (Jaguars). Not exactly a list ready for Canton. So the Rams would be wise to at least inquire about trading down and loading up if there isn’t a player that they are in love with that will be there.

The New York Jets have signed free agent TE Bubba Franks. The announcement was made by Jets’ General Manager Mike Tannenbaum.

Franks (6-6, 265, University of Miami), whose given name is Daniel Lamont Franks, joins the Jets after eight seasons with Green Bay. He has played in 114 games, starting 94, and has recorded 256 receptions for 2,300 yards and 32 touchdowns. His career totals for receptions and touchdowns rank second among tight ends in Packers’ history, while his yardage total stands fifth. He earned three consecutive Pro Bowl berths, appearing from 2001-03. Originally selected by Green Bay in the first round (14th overall) of the 2000 NFL draft, he played in 82 regular season games and six postseason contests before missing his first NFL game in 2005.

Matt Walsh, the former NE Patriots video assistant from 1999 to 2003, is looking to strike a deal with NFL investigators and let them in on his knowledge of the Spygate situation. He had been seeking indemnity from the league against legal or financial damages from the investigations by the NFL and Senator Arlen Specter’s probe.  Walsh’s interview can prove damaging for Patriots head coach Bill Belichick, who has maintained that there was no cheating involved in the tactics, including  and alleged video taping of the St. Louis Rams’ final walkthrough right before SB XXXVI. Walsh was fired by New England and is presently a golf pro in Hawaii.

The 2008 NFL Draft is right around the corner and the cloud of mystery that hangs over it every year is no exception this time around. Who will Bill Parcells look to select to begin the rebuilding phase of the 1-15 Miami Dolphins? Will he trade down and hoard extra picks such as he did back in 1997 when he passed up Orlando Pace for the New York Jets and ended up with James Farrior? Bet on the Tuna keeping the top pick and grabbing a defensive stud such as Virginia’s Chris Long or Glenn Dorsey from LSU. Some mock draft boards have the aforementioned Dorsey falling down to the end of the top-10. I highly doubt that will occur, and expect him to be gone by the time the jets pick sixth.  The top offensive lineman expected to go early is Jake Long of Michigan. At running back, Arkansas’ Darren McFadden should be off the board in the top five. At quarterback, Matt Ryan of BC is the top dog, and although he did not work out at the scouting combine, he is being looked at as an NFL-caliber signal-caller.

The New York Jets have signed unrestricted free agent FB Tony Richardson from the Minnesota Vikings. The announcement was made by Jets’ General Manager Mike Tannenbaum.

Richardson (6-1, 238, Auburn), a 13-year NFL veteran, originally entered the NFL as an undrafted rookie free agent with the Dallas Cowboys in 1994. In 13 seasons, Richardson has played in 186 games and made 106 starts. He has rushed for 1,601 yards and 15 touchdowns on 407 carries and has added 201 receptions for 1,498 yards and nine scores. A Pro Bowl selection following the 2003, 2004 and 2007 seasons, Richardson has served as the lead blocker for Priest Holmes, Larry Johnson, Chester Taylor and Adrian Peterson, helping them rush for more than 1,200 yards in a combined total of six seasons. In 1995, he paved the way for Marcus Allen to score his 100th career rushing touchdown. During his 11 seasons in Kansas City, the Chiefs recorded four of the top five single-season rushing performances in the team’s history.

“Tony will serve as a tremendous asset in both the running and passing game as well as on special teams,” said Jets Head Coach Eric Mangini. “With nearly 200 games of NFL experience, he is a consummate professional who will serve as a great resource for our younger players.”

Richardson was named Sports Illustrated All-Pro in 1999 and 2000, second-team All-Pro by The Associated Press in 2004 and earned recognition on USA Today’s All-Joe Team in 2000 and 2001.

On Thursday afternoon, Brett Favre ended a 17-year NFL career and had a difficult time doing so. With emotions taking over, the 38 year-old Green Bay Packers quarterback had a tough time even putting the words together.

“As they say, all good things must come to an end,” said Favre to the mass of media assembled at the press conference. “I look forward to whatever the future may hold for me.”

The Packers will miss the three-time NFL MVP, who is still the league leader with 442 touchdown passes, 61,655 passing yards and 160 career victories. Favre also started 253 consecutive regular season games, the most of any QB in the league.
