Members of the New York Jets football team (Darrelle Revis, Shaun Ellis, Calvin Pace and Marques Douglas) will visit I.S. 192 Middle School in Queens, N.Y., to see first-hand how at-risk children benefit from after-school programs.  This season, each athlete will donate monies to the After-School All-Stars “Touchdown Shutdown” fundraising program either per tackle or per sack made during the NFL season.

After-School All-Stars is a comprehensive after-school program provider, founded 17 years ago by Arnold Schwarzenegger, which offers a safe and educational place for underserved middle school children to go after school.  The organization currently serves 72,000 children in 13 cities throughout the U.S.  The New York Chapter (ASASNY) offers after-school programs at three middle schools in Queens. St. John’s University and its School of Education has partnered with ASASNY in this venture.

What:   Revis, Ellis, Pace and Douglas will tour after-school classes and end the day with a Question and Answer session with kids.

About St. John’s University and After-School-All-Stars New York (ASASNY)

I.S. 192 is a middle school St. John’s University serves under a 21^st Century Community Learning Center Grant. St. John’s is the named recipient of the grant and ASASNY works together with the University and its School of Education to manage this program. This is the second year of the grant and the after-school population has increased 62.5% from year one to include 200+ students in the program this year.  ASASNY believes this is due to the continuity, consistency and commitment of the staff (predominantly St. John’s students) and the introduction of a new CampUs experience which has been incorporated into summer academic/athletic programming on campus during August. St. John’s and ASASNY have been able to establish the notion of continuous learning and the prevention of loss of learning over the summer with this model.  Students participate in the following classes: Cooking, Graffiti Art, Volleyball, Wii, and Badminton. ASASNY has served over 20,000 youth including children from public housing and homeless facilities, through daily after-school programs and through its CampUs summer programs created with St. John’s University and funded by the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA).  To learn more, visit www.ASASNY.com.
