Fans waiting in line for New York Jets tickets, or waiting online for Jets tickets, are not sure what the season is going to hold for them. The offense tried fix the massive leaks in the offensive line that allowed the quarterbacks to be sacked 53 times. The two lineman, Alan Faneca and Damien Woody should help the running game and passing game, but the biggest upgrade of the summer was the defense.
Late season the team gave up 355 points. That is over 22 points a game. That offense had no chance to score three touchdowns and then pick up a field goal for good measure. Whether the defense suffered because they were truly bad or they were overworked or some kind of combination of both is no longer important.
This season at the Meadowlands the Jets will have Kris Jenkins at nose tackle, Calvin Pace as the right outside linebacker, and Vernon Ghaston waiting to step in and make a huge impact. The three additions should bolster a defense that just two years ago allowed only 18 points a game.
The five year contract just awarded to Ghaston has to raise Jets fans hopes. The team will probably not upend the New England Patriots atop the AFC East, but they might make a run at the wild card.
At the very least the improvement on the defensive side of the ball will make sure that New York realizes that it has more than one football team worth watching. The New York Giants may have won the Super Bowl, but they have many doubters throughout the league. In fact many people would not be terrible surprised is the Jets and the Giant ended up with similar records and were sitting at home for the playoffs.
Jets fans are hoping the latest moves will give coach Eric Mangini the pieces he needs for a surprise run of his own.
